A Zambia-based power utility company Zesco has distributed more than 480,000 energy efficient lamps nationwide out of its 1 million bulb target, according to reports by Zambia Reports and others.
The company intends to procure another 650,000 lamps for distribution, said the company spokesman Henry Kapata.
Zesco aims to conserve 200 megawatts of energy through the energy efficient lamp distribution project, added Kapata.
The spokesperson did not offer many details about the type of lamps distributed, other than the average lifetime is about three to five years, and refuted rumors that the lamps contain mercury.
The lamp distribution project is part of the company’s 1 million lamps distribution project that it initiated in Lukasa since August 2015, reported the Daily Nation.
So far the power utility company has distributed lamps in North Western Province, parts of Central Province and Lusaka Province.
