BrightYolk to Launch Eco-Friendly LED Module Replacement Bulbs

(Author: Judy Lin, Chief Editor, LEDinside)

Taiwanese LED luminaire manufacturer BrightYolk is preparing to introduce a more environmental friendly LED bulb, where consumers can directly replace broken bulb components.

Most LED bulb designs at the moment use an integrated design or all-in-one design, where the LED package, driver, and lamp cover are sealed with silicone encapsulents. This makes it very difficult to replace individual LED components when they break. This design can also be very wasteful because when the bulb breaks, the entire luminaire is usually thrown out.

To reduce wastage caused by broken LED bulbs, BrightYolk’s concept modulizes the LED driver, which is usually the primary cause of malfunctioning LED bulbs. The LED driver usually has a short lifetime of about two to three years, in comparison LED chips can last for five years (50,000 hours) or more.

By replacing only the LED driver, BrightYolk can reduce the cost of swapping LED bulbs by about 50%, since only 25% of the LED bulb design requires replacement, states BrightYolk.

The company has launched 8W LED bulbs with an input voltage of 100-240 VAC, and color temperature of 3000K and 5700K with a CRI performance above 75.

The luminous efficiency for cool white LED bulb models is 100 lm/W, and less than 90 lm/W for bright yellow. The LED chips also have a lifetime of more than 20,000 hours, and can be driven at 0.5W *18 pcs.

Backers of the BrightYolk LED bulbs will receive the bulbs by January 2017. So far the company has received US $ 450 out of its US $5,000 goal, and the project will only be fully funded if it receives the targeted amount.
