Rocky Mount is to be lit with brighter light soon, reported Rocky Mount Telegram. The recent meeting held by Rocky Mount City Council touched on full switch to LED streetlights, said Rich Worsinger, director of energy resources. The total cost of the conversion is approximately US $ 3 million, which will be full funded by the city’s electric fund, said Worsinger. The city plans to pay for the conversion with dent financing, said City Manager Charles Penny.
The LED lighting upgrades is a universal change across North Carolina and the United States. LED lighting is relatively more efficient and consumes 50% less energy when comparing to existing lighting technologies.
The installation of up to 7,100 LED streetlights will cost the city US $1.8 million. Meanwhile, approximately 4,900 area lights will also be converted to LED lamps at US 1.2 million. The selected LED lights are expected to have 20 years of lifetime.
The majority of citizens’ feedback on LED pilot areas has been positive, said Worsinger.
