Samsung Display Renovates LCD Plant into OLED Production Plant

Samsung Display has replaced one of its LCD plants into an OLED production line as it works towards focusing on the latter technology, reported The Korea Herald.

This will be the sixth LCD plant that the Korean company shut down and converted into OLED operations.

According to industry sources, the display-making unit of Samsung Electronics will halt operations of LCD production lines in Asan, South Chungcheong Province by the end of 2016.

The company will also sell its LCD production equipment to a third party that is rumored to be India0based Twinstar Display.

Operations of the company’s eight LCD plants in Korea until 2008 will be slashed down to three.

The Asan L7 plant built in 2005 has a monthly production capacity of 320,000 seventh generation LCD panels applied in 40-inch TVs, but demand is slowing because of cheaper panels from Chinese rivals.

News reports noted the plant is expected to be renovated for OLED production, due to the next generation Apple iPhone to be launched next year. The company did not confirm the iPhone deal, though.

Samsung announced plans of expanding its A3 OLED plant in Asan back in February, but that was insufficient for meeting growing demands in the near future.
