JDI Rumored to be Developing Ultra-thin Bezel LCD for iPhone 8

LCD display manufacturer Japan Display Inc. (JDI) developed an ultra-thin bezel LCD that is merely millimeters thick, which could greatly increase smartphone makers design flexibility, reported Nikkei.

According to the report, the display being developed by JDI can reduce the thickness of current LCDs by 30%, which could remove the need of home buttons, and allow the front of the smartphone to display images in full. Additionally, the two displays are aligned parallel of each other, and can be used as a foldable large smartphone display.

Competition is escalating in the OLED R&D sector in the display industry, but LCDs still have numerous advantages in precision and lifetime. Despite investing in OLED technology, JDI is also working on launching new LCD products to target new clients, or to maintain current orders.

JDI is one of Apple iPhone’s main display suppliers.

According to a Nikkei Asian Review report announced on Aug. 23, 2016 sources familiar with Apple’s latest developments revealed iPhone 8 rumored to be released in 2017 will come in three models, aside from the current 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch, a larger high-end smartphone will also be released. The smartphones might adopt flexible OLED displays similar to rival Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge.

Reports from Japanese technology media Macotakara cited comments made by well-known Apple blogger John Gruber, who maintains the leading industry blog Daring Fireball during a PodCast show on May 12, 2016.

During the “The Talk Show With John Gruber” podcast, he remarked the iPhone to be released in 2017 will conceal the FaceTime camera, Touch ID home button, and microphones into the display. The new iPhone released in 2017 will be similar to holding a huge display.

MacRumors reported earlier in April this year, Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz has received information from industry insiders that the iPhone 8 design will be very different from previous generation phones to include the usage of a large OLED display, support wireless charging, and forego the Home Button altogether.
