Hot Picks of the Week Sept. 12-14

Highlights this week:

Wait…..its Wednesday right? So why are LEDinside editors posting this? Due to the upcoming Chinese Moon Festival, we will not be in office from Sept. 15-16, 2016 and will not be updating our site during this time. So we’d like to wish all our readers Happy Chinese Moon Festival in advance, as we battle against natural elements caused by raging Super Typhoon Mernati in Taiwan.

So what is going on in the industry so far this week? Seoul Semiconductor has taken a similar approach to rival Nichia in its patent suits. The Korean company has recently filed a patent infringement suit against large U.S. retailer Kmart for selling LED products infringing eight LED patents.

Philips Lighting is starting a new indoor lighting positioning program Yellow Dot, which certifies LED luminaire manufacturers products interoperability with the Dutch company’s lighting positioning system. Almost like a Philips Lighting indoor lighting positioning consortium, to promote market penetration of VLC technology in our editorial team’s humble opinion.

Things are not going well in the sapphire industry in 2016, top players Veeco, Aixtron and Rubicon have all reported rather dismaying financial results earlier. Now it seems things have taken the worse turn for Rubicon, who seems eager to quit its role as a sapphire supplier in the LED industry altogether, announcing it is shutting down its plant in Malaysia.

Lastly of our pick this week, Cree has squeezed into our list, even though Osram has announced several interesting automotive lighting products, which can be found in the three press releases below. So, why Cree? Well, most manufacturers that release new product lineups usually do it for a couple models, but it seems Cree is revamping an entire LED luminaire product line with the release of 25 new types of bulbs under its Spice family. Could it be a new product strategy targeting the luminaire and end-user segment? We’re not sure.

It is also just two weeks away from LEDinside’s micro-LED display forum on Sept. 30, 2016 in Taipei, Taiwan. We are looking into a technology that potentially will outshine OLED displays, for those interested in the current technology progress and bottlenecks, please click here to find out more.
