Another UAE emirate Ras Al Khaimah announced it will be rolling out a major streetlight replacement project along major roads to the airport, public parks and others, reported Khaleej Times.
The emirate’s department of public works and services has rolled out a traditional streetlight replacement project to install energy efficient LEDs on major roads in the emirate.
"Most of the roads in the emirate are now being lit by these power-saving and environment friendly LEDs," said Ahmed Al Hammadi, director-general of the department. A survey comparing the different types of lights including sodium, induction and LEDs on the market was conducted.
"LED lights are more efficient, consume less power, has a longer life and is more durable and environment friendly."
The LED lights to be installed will be dark sky compliant, which means it will have minimum light pollution and directly illuminate the ground, he added. This contrasts with high pressure sodium lights and other lights that tend to be omnidirectional and scatter light everywhere.
The new LED lights will not only be brighter and improve visibility on sidewalks and roads, but accompanying smart technology can also offer real-time monitoring.
