Taiwan’s Mikro Mesa and China’s HKC to Jointly Build Micro LED Lab in China

Mikro Mesa Technology, a Micro LED startup from Taiwan, is reported to set up a Micro LED laboratory in Chongqing City, China. It is a collaboration between Mikro Mesa and Chinese Chongqing HKC Optoelectronics Technology, a local TFT-LCD panels maker.

The laboratory is due for completion by the fourth quarter in 2017 and the company aims to develop panchromatic Micro LED displays by 2018.

This would be the first Taiwan-China joint Micro LED laboratory, taking full advantage of technology collaboration between the two sides, company founder Liyi Chen said.

Mikro Mesa has focused on developing Micro LED technology in recent years and has been granted 12 patents by the USPTO.

LEDinside reported in January that the Taiwanese manufacturer was able to develop a display with a light emitting surface area of 3 um x 3 um that successfully illuminated pixels under lab conditions in 2016.

This is currently the world’s smallest Micro LED and is power leakage free. In the future this technology can be used in large 80-inch and above TV displays. Moreover, this Micro LED display can be introduced into wearable devices such as smartwatches and smart bands, and eventually smartphones.

Mikro Mesa pointed out that TFT-LCD panel makers can apply most of the manufacturing processes for TFT-LCD panels to produce Micro LED ones, which could significantly reduce cost. In addition, Micro LED displays are much more energy efficient than TFT-LCD ones.

LEDinside has reached out to Mikro Mesa for comment and will update new information once the company replies.
