Major Chinese LED package supplier MLS teams up with Taiwanese auto lamp manufacturers to develop automotive lighting. Targets of its early stage development are aftermarkets of rear lamp and turn signal in Taiwan.
Epistar is expected to be one of the company's suppliers of automotive LED chips.
LED light sources for those auto lamps will be manufactured in two MLS plants in Zhongshan and Jiangxi, China. The company's Taiwan-based subsidiary is estimated to be able to ship automotive LED light sources in 1H19.
The key to facilitating the replacement of halogen auto lamps with LEDs lies in costs, according to an industry source. The shift in the flagship vehicle segment tends to be more obvious, yet the adoption of LED lamps in the economy car segment is the main driver to bolster the penetration of LED in the market.
The rise of electric vehicles will be another factor driving the growth of LED auto lamps.
Currently, the penetration of LED in the interior automotive lighting market is relatively high, the source said. As for exterior automotive lighting, it becomes more common to see LEDs in fog lamps, rear lights, and center high-mounted stop lamps (CHMSL). Yet, headlight wise, only the high-end vehicle space shows a noticeable LED consumption.
