LEDinside: Understanding Activities of the Key Technology Suppliers Is Crucial in Following the Development of the Micro LED Industry

LEDinside, a division of the global market intelligence firm TrendForce, says that significant progress in the evolution of Micro LED technologies during the recent period has attracted the interest of many supply chain actors. Companies that are now pursuing Micro LED include material and equipment providers in the upstream, component suppliers in the mid-stream, and brand vendors of whole devices in the downstream. In trying to gain a foothold in this field, they are disrupting the traditional ecosystem of the electronics sector and contributing to the formation of a new industry chain. For instance, advances in the shrinking of LED chips are also spurring advances in the mass transfer and inspection process—a section of Micro LED production that has drawn in many new startups. An in-depth understanding of the Micro LED industry chain as well as the related technologies can be obtained through LEDinside’s latest report, LEDinside 2020 Micro LED Next-Generation Display Technology and Supply Chain Analysis.

According to LEDinside’s research, the amount of epi-wafers used in manufacturing a Micro LED display panel depends on the specified resolution. Compared with other display applications, TVs and large-size displays offer much higher resolutions and thus require an enormous amount of LED chips to compose the self-emissive pixels. This means that the number of epi-wafers consumed for TVs and large-size displays will be much greater than for other applications as well. LEDinside forecasts that the total annual demand for Micro LED epi-wafers (4-inch equivalents) from TVs for 2024 will reach approximately 1 million pieces. The total annual demand from IT displays for the same year will come to around the same figure.

The pace of development progress varies in each application segment of the Micro LED market, though technological advances on the whole have significantly expanded the scope of potential applications from small to large display sizes. Possibilities include small HMDs, wearable displays, AR/VR devices, mid-size displays for laptops, monitors, automotive displays, TVs, and large-size display systems (that can scale up to the dimension of a “Digital display”). LEDinside believes that among applications, the growth potential is especially the strongest for large-size displays because Samsung has been investing substantial resources into developing this kind of products. As a segment within the wider Micro LED market, the market for large-size Micro LED displays is projected to grow to more than US$2 billion in total annual value by 2024.

LEDinside provides a detailed examination of companies with key technologies in the field of Micro LED

Apple has established itself in Taiwan as part of its strategy to build up the capability to develop Micro LED. Situated in Taiwan’s municipal district of Taoyuan, Apple’s Micro LED Longtan Fab is near local actors in the upstream and downstream of the supply chain. Notable examples include foundry service provider TSMC and panel manufacturer AUO. Hence, Apple has significant advantages in terms of resources and efficiency when it comes to R&D. The Taoyuan base is currently small in scale and primarily purposed for trial production of small-size Micro LED displays. Whether the base will expand and engage in volume production depends on Apple’s progress and decision.

Samsung unveiled the world’s first modular Micro LED TV known as “The Wall” at CES 2018. Reaching 146 inches in size, The Wall features an extremely high level of definition and aims to surpass the limits with regard to size, resolution, and form. In following up, Samsung proceeded to introduce a 219-inch and a 292-inch modular Micro LED display at the 2019 and 2020 editions of CES respectively. These two products, which adopt the passive matrix driver and allow for interconnection between modules, are a major step forward in the development of solutions capable of both scaling up and achieving a high resolution. The Wall series is expected to target the market segment for large-size displays.

At the same time, Samsung has also built Micro LED displays that adopt the active matrix driver. Samsung first introduced a 75-inch Micro LED TV with active matrix at CES 2019. The product was the first of “The Window” series of Micro LED displays that are based on the active matrix backplane. The latest and larger model under The Window series (i.e., 88 inches in size) was presented at CES 2020. In addition to striving to become the leader in large-size Micro LED displays, Samsung is preparing to capture the market segment for indoor Micro LED displays under 100 inches as well.
