According to Korean news, Samsung Electronics has reduced the number of home appliances launching next year that it will apply UV LED on from its initial target.
In September 2020, the company had planned to install UV LED on up to 20 to 30% of new home appliances launching in 2021, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But it has reduced the number of models that it will install UV LED on and instead will expand their application depending on market reactions.
Samsung has recently begun testing the installation of UV LED on its home appliances launching next year. Only one model per a product series is planned get UV LED.
The company was testing UV-C LED (250-280nm) on some home appliances, including refrigerators, air purifiers, ACs, washing machines and a cloth cleaners. The company has already installed UV LED on its Bespoke refrigerator and AirDresser.
The change to a more conservative schedule in applying UV-C LED was due to difficulty in estimating market reaction and disinfection effectiveness. Samsung was also considering using UV lamps if UV-C LED’s effectiveness is less than expected.
