E Ink Partners with TÜV Rheinland to Establish Paper Like Display Standards and Awarded the World’s First Certification of Its Kind

Leading digital paper supplier E Ink Holdings was awarded the “Paper Like Display” Quality-mark and China-mark for its color epaper display module by TÜV Rheinland Greater China—a Germany-based international inspection institution. The module, E Ink Kaleido Plus, is the first epaper module granted with the world-class certifications.

Demand for e-paper has rocketed as digital display contents advance with increasing emphasis on visual health among users. However, the existing display product standards target at self-luminous products (e.g., LCDs and OLED panels), which are not suitable for reflective displays such as e-paper. Therefore, the industry is in need of standards that can scientifically assess the performance of these reflective display products.

With 2 years of cooperation, technical teams from TÜV Rheinland and E Ink proposed optical indicators determining the reading comfort level of paper like displays by considering comfort and safety dimensions that are closely incorporated with latest research on user experience and visual health. The two teams also determined factors affecting reading comfort by setting related parameters based on user experience analyses and finally proposed the Paper Similarity Index (PSI).

The E Ink Kaleido Plus features 16 greyscales and 4,096 colors, which is suitable for presenting various infographics containing tables, maps, pictures, comics and advertisements. The module can clearly present text and detailed images in the sunlight and has scored 86 points in the PSI test.

Additionally, epaper is energy-efficient and does not consume any power when the same content or image is displayed. Even when power supply is suspended, the original contents are still on the epaper display. Epaper’s ultra-low power requirements can help reduce energy consumption substantially and assist enterprises to achieve net zero emissions.

Presently, E Ink is partnering with 9 module vendors who adopt unique paper-like thin films to produce epaper modules; the company will constantly apply epaper to other scenarios. Its CEO Johnson Lee specified that E Ink looks forward to collaborating with other epaper players to jointly promote the said “paper like display” certifications for epaper products and eventually create the most comfortable, eye-friendly epaper for users.
