By Entering the Second “Centurial Boom”, ams OSRAM Becomes a Global Leader in Optical Solutions

The successful acquisition of OSRAM by ams led to the creation of a global leader in optical solutions. Known for great creativity and engineering expertise, ams and OSRAM delivers industrial capacity in sensors and light technologies that serve for customers worldwide. While drawing on a century of experience and heritage, the integrated ams OSRAM group kicked off its operation in 2021, aiming to dominate the global community with innovative optical solutions and lay a foundation for its business in the next century.

Elsa Li, head of corporate and marketing communications, Greater China, specified that ams OSRAM has become a dominant optical solution provider through bold investments in disruptive innovation and continuous transformation delivering industry-leading profitability and growth.

In 2020, the company generated USD 5.5 billion in combined revenues with key technology areas of consumer electronics, automotive, industry, and medical solutions. Specifically, the revenue ratio of AIM (automotive, industrial, medical) to consumer electronics is 6:4, demonstrating a balanced revenue split with successful strategic development.

Daniel Lee, CTO of ROA (Rest of Asia) at ams OSRAM

mentioned that the company has established its business in consumer, automotive, industrial, and medical sectors using sensing, lighting, and visualization solutions.

  1. By developing the adaptive drive beam (ADB) headlight EVIYOS 2.0 for automotive markets, ams OSRAM has shipped samples of the product to leading car makers. As for automotive sensors, the company’s edge emitting laser (EEL) lineup has become the world’s first LiDAR solution for major autonomous driving brands. ADAS/autonomous driving sectors will likely be major markets for LiDAR systems.
  2. ams OSRAM puts great emphasis on consumer electronic products, including eye tracking, 3D sensing, and micro projectors (RGB laser and Micro LED) for metaverse devices. The company’s image sensors, DOE, spectrometers are also favored by customers.
  3. Industrial markets include industrial LiDAR, service robots, UV-C disinfection, and horticultural lighting, all of which thrived in 2021 with great attention.
  4. Medical applications include CT sensing, NanEye, and miniature camera for endoscopy. Despite being related small compared to other business areas, the medical business has grown steadily, with several products enjoying rapid growth in recent years.

Alan Chung, Country Manager in Taiwan at ams OSRAM,

indicated that—when talking about the development of Taiwanese markets—in the next 5 years, the logo lamp will be applied to grille lighting. Relevant products are scheduled to be adopted by car makers in 2024 and will be officially available in 2025, which is highly anticipated. Additionally, the demand for HDR, local dimming, and wide color gamut products will increase in the in-cabin display market. ams OSRAM has actively partnered with automotive panel customers, aiming to make direct-lit backlight LED available in 2022 and largely adopt the component between 2023 and 2026. Markets of interactive projectors and industrial robots based on ToF projection are also rising stably.

Finally, in the metaverse madness, ams OSRAM already offers relevant products including eye tracking devices, 3D sensing, and RGB lasers. With the introduction of Micro LED technologies in the coming years, the company’s products will surely meet brands’ and consumers’ expectations.
