Innoviz emerged as a Tier 1 LiDAR supplier for OEMs in late 2022, specifically for the Volkswagen Group. Penetrating the somewhat closed supply chain relationships between automotive OEMs and traditional Tier 1 suppliers is challenging and makes it a significant milestone for Innoviz. As levels of autonomy increase in cars and sensing and compute requirements challenge the capabilities of traditional Tier 1 suppliers, OEMs are increasingly working directly with semiconductor and optics companies for the supply of these critical technologies. Direct relationships between these suppliers and Volkswagen’s design, quality and procurement teams create transparency and bring significant efficiencies in costs, time and integration smoothness.
The implications for Innoviz are significant. Volkswagen is among the top 3 automotive OEMs in the world, with multiple brands in cars, trucking and light commercial vehicles. The initial design win is with the Audi brand. It provides a seal of approval for extension into other Volkswagen brands. Additionally, being blessed as a Tier 1 supplier by Volkswagen lends significant credibility for Innoviz as they pursue Tier 1 relationships with other OEMs.
