Walsall Council to convert streetlights to low Energy LED lighting, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions

News Source:

Walsall Council’s plan to convert 23,000 streetlights to low energy LED lighting is due to reach completion this April. The initiative began in April 2022 and is projected to deliver significant reductions in energy usage and carbon emissions.

Alongside the lantern conversion, the council have installed remote monitoring that allows them to identify issues and control lighting levels.

LED light direction eliminates glare and reduces light pollution. Residents have experience minimal disruption during the conversion, with each light taking less than 30 minutes to change.

“ The conversion to LED street lighting represents a crucial step towards a more sustainable future for Walsall. Not only will this initiative significantly reduce our carbon footprint, but also provide residents with an efficient and effective street lighting solution. As a council we are dedicated to fostering sustainable practices. The transition to LED street lighting signifies a milestone in our ongoing efforts to create a cleaner, greener borough. “

- Councillor Kerry Murphy
Portfolio Holder for Street Pride at Walsall Council

The council's decision stems from successful trials dating back to 2010, with an impressive 50% reduction in energy and carbon emissions already achieved.

With the ongoing upgrade scheduled for completion by April 2024, further savings are anticipated through dimming trials approved by the council in February 2024.
