A cinema on the new roof terrace at the the Danish Film Institute (DFI) building in Copenhagen has been fitted with a Leyard 4K LED screen.
The cinema is the centrepiece of the 1,700 sq metre terrace, which is also home to a bar, eatery, exhibition space, children’s play area and two outdoor ‘videotheque’ covered booths for watching movies on large touchscreens.
The DFI chose a Leyard Luminate Ultra Series 1.5 mm display due to its suitability for outdoor use, with an IP66 weatherproof rating, dual power supply and ultra-wide viewing angle.
The LED wall, which is 6.5m wide and 2.5m high, features an all-in-one high-strength frame design, a high-precision seamless splicing cabinet, and excellent colour uniformity and image quality. A common-cathode drive offers lower power consumption, reduced heat generation and a longer lifespan.
The cinema seats 127 people and features a retractable roof and removable sides, providing protection from the elements.
Project manager Christian Dannevang, director of business development at AVC, which undertook the installation, says: “It’s designed similarly to an indoor cinema but with loudspeakers built for outdoor use and intelligent sound design to minimise the disturbance to neighbours.”
When the sun shines, the screen's brightness is adjusted to ensure the experience mirrors that of an indoor cinema. Venue staff simply press 'play' and the sensors handle the rest.
The DFI's manager, Kenneth Just, says: "We have the ability to showcase films at a high technical level, with a different display technology than we know from our traditional cinema halls.
“The LED screen enables us to show films outdoors, even in daylight. Our guests express great joy at the outdoor screenings under the open sky, with views over the city's rooftops."
