As Hisense and TCL gear up to launch LCD TVs powered by RGB Mini LEDs in 2025, Samsung has taken a bold step forward by unveiling its first LCD TV featuring RGB Micro LED backlights at CES 2025. This innovation marks a significant leap in display technology.
More Options for Ultra-High-Definition TVs
Samsung announced plans to make the TV available in 75-inch and 85-inch models with 4K resolution, as well as a 98-inch model boasting 8K resolution. These sizes aim to cater to a wide range of consumers seeking top-tier viewing experiences.
Demonstration: A New Era in Backlighting
Unveiled during Samsung’s First Look event, the display generated intrigue and speculation. Initially labeled as “RGB Micro LED,” it raised eyebrows since Samsung has already offered high-priced Micro LED TVs for several years. Upon clarification from Samsung engineers, it was revealed that this is an LCD TV employing Micro LED backlighting, a significant upgrade from the current Mini LED technology.
The showcased 98-inch prototype with 8K resolution is set to serve as Samsung’s flagship 8K TV for 2025. Samsung representatives confirmed that the transition from Mini LED to Micro LED requires a substantial increase in the number of LEDs, providing “at least three times” more LEDs compared to typical Mini LED TVs. This advancement will enhance luminance, expand the number of dimming zones, improve energy efficiency, and deliver unparalleled image quality.
During the demonstration, the prototype was displayed in vivid picture mode, emphasizing its superior color capabilities. The RGB Micro LED backlight behind the VA LCD panel boosts color volume, surpassing the performance of conventional Mini LED backlights that rely on blue LEDs and quantum dots. This results in vibrant and bright colors that many observers initially mistook for a self-emitting Micro LED TV.
Looking Ahead
While Samsung aims for a 2025 release, the high cost of RGB Micro LED technology suggests the TV will command a premium price. Nonetheless, it represents a significant advancement, potentially setting a new standard in the industry. This development could also influence the trajectory of RGB Mini LED technology, which competitors like Hisense and TCL are adopting later this year. Samsung’s ambitious timeline remains to be seen, but the introduction of RGB Micro LED backlighting signals a promising evolution in display innovation.
