On April 8, Sony officially announced its next-generation Mini LED TV technology branded as “True RGB” on the social media platform X. This new TV technology is powered by an independently controlled red, green, and blue (RGB) LED backlight system that delivers direct illumination through all three colors of light, enabling more vibrant pure color reproduction, brighter output, and the largest color volume ever achieved in Sony’s home TV lineup.
Color volume is known as an essential metric for measuring the overall color reproduction capabilities of display devices by evaluating both their color gamut and brightness range. A higher color volume indicates that the display offers more diverse and precise color gradients and gradations at various brightness levels.
Sony said that the True RGB Bravia TVs are scheduled to launch in spring 2026, with more product details to be disclosed in due course.
Previously, Sony stated in a March 16 press release that its next-generation true color RGB TV was demonstrated to a global audience for the first time at AWE 2026.
Sony pointed out that this new technology features a wide color gamut, precise grayscale control, and wider viewing angles. In real-world demonstrations, the RGB LED TVs maintain saturated colors and full on-screen brightness, effectively reducing color banding at high brightness levels while offering consistent color accuracy and contrast across various viewing angles.
From a technical standpoint, RGB Mini LED solutions enable independent light emission through red, green, and blue LEDs. Compared with traditional single-color backlights, they offer better color gamut performance and higher control precision, thereby reducing color conversion loss. This approach is rapidly gaining industry momentum. Besides Sony, Hisense, Philips, Dreame, HKC, and MTC are also among the TV suppliers launching RGB Mini LED products or solutions this year.
Interestingly, Sony has recently made significant strategic moves in the broader TV market. On March 31, TCL Electronics announced a cash deal worth approximately HKD 3.78 billion to establish a joint venture with Sony and acquire Sony Malaysia (SOEM) to take over Sony’s home entertainment business, including the development, manufacturing, and sales of televisions. Under this arrangement, the new company will be 51% owned by TCL and 49% owned by Sony.
