TT electronics Optek Technology has integrated four 1W LED die into a single assembly for multi-colour and monochrome solid state lighting and has developed a star-shaped red/green/blue/amber LED assembly with exceptional thermal performance.
Alan Bennett, vice president of sales for OPTEK Technology said the combination of red, green, blue and amber high-brightness LEDs provides solid state lighting designers with an extensive number of colour combinations. The star-shaped assembly results in a simplified mounting configuration, while the design of the part provides customers with optimal luminous intensity and transfer of heat generated due to increased current value.
Designated the OV4Z Optimal IV Star Series, the LEDs packages feature a recessed die design that houses four LED chips under a 5mm optical-grade water clear lens. The assemblies achieve an extremely low thermal resistance of under 2°C/W from junction to heatsink.
The company says typical forward voltage at 350mA ranges from 2.5-3.9V for the blue (455-460nm), green (530-535nm), red (620-630nm) and amber (585-595nm) devices and 8.6-13.1V for the mono-colour assemblies. Luminous flux at 350mA ranges from 5-36 lm and 29-162 lm, depending on LED colour. Maximum allowable junction temperature is 130°C, with an operating temperature range of -50 to +100°C.
Monochrome assemblies are available with mounting pads, while RGBA types have through-hole pins or surface mounting pads. The assemblies are 21mm in diameter on a 1mm thick star-type PCB with six mounting slots.
Applications are foreseen in large signage (interior and exterior), landscape architectural lighting for recreational areas such as pools, spas and boats, and specialty lighting including vending machines, display cases and stage lighting.
Typical pricing for the Optimal IV Star Series ranges from $7.78 to $10.37 in quantities of 1,000, depending on color.
