San’an Opto announced the company will be purchasing  advanced 20 single chamber or five four-chambered GaN MOCVD systems from international companies for its Xiamen subsidiary on Dec. 16, 2013. Xiamen San’an Opto has received RMB 24 million (US$ 3.95 million) subsidiaries for four four-chambered MOCVD systems, or about 30 percent of total subsidiaries on Dec. 13, 2013. 

Taiwanese LED manufacturer LiteOn discussed the merger of multiple wholly owned subsidiaries during a board meeting conducted on December 16th. The merger will include LSE, LiteOn Clean Energy Technology Corp, Leotek, as well as the consolidation of three companies in Dongguan China. Sharp Corp. has developed a LED device for backlight in LCD panels and expanded color gamut by 25% without lowering the screen’s brightness, according to a Tech-On article. Using the LED device, the LCD panels can now reach 90% color gamut on NTSC (CIE1931) standards without making any changes to liquid crystal cells.

German car manufacturer BMW gives an in depth video introduction on its latest LED laser lights in its concept car BMW i8. The car maker claims the new laser LED headlights high beam lights are capable of emitting lights at longer range of 600 meters compared to normal LED high beam’s 300 meters. Spurred by Chinese TV manufacturers’ demands, LED TV penetration rates reached 95% in 2013, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of global research institute TrendForce. The organization estimates LED TV will completely replace CCFL by 2014, and annual LED TV shipment volume will grow at YOY 3% to 209 million. However, LED for backlight TV applications market value is expected to decrease 17% to US$ 2.41 billion. The main cause behind LED TVs growing shipment volume, but lower market value has been direct-type LED TVs reduced usage of LEDs and its high penetration rate of more than 60% in 2014. Compared to edge-type LED TVs, direct-type LED TVs only uses half the number of LEDs.

Taiwan LED package manufacturer Harvatek that launched their RGB LED product in 2013 is upgrading package specs from 2020 to 0606. The company’s current monthly production capacity for RGB LEDs is 50KK and projected to expand to 100KK in 2014.
