On southern-west coast of Singapore, there is a huge and grand garden called “Gardens by the Bay” at 54 hectares. On 29th June this year, the Bay South Garden featured in two colossal glass enclosed glasshouses and a cluster of 18 distinctively shaped structures of various sizes called “SuperTrees” opened. Immediately after it opened to the public, this new garden became an icon in Singapore. The origin of this project is an ambition to make Singapore a “Gardens City” or “City in a Garden.” To achieve this, National Parks Board launched an international competition for designers of the Masterplan in January 2006 and Grant associates and Gustafson Porter were awarded the Masterplan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens respectively. However, the local consultants for the Bay South tried to invite few international lighting consultants including Kaoru Mende and his colleagues to bid for the lighting design of the garden and they were awarded to work on the project.

Taiwan LED packaging manufacturer Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT) after being listed on the Gretai Securities Market on June 25th 2013, on September 25th held a shareholder’s meeting to appoint new chairman to the board. AOT stated that due to the increased demand after the company was listed.

Aiming at international lighting design and lighting industry for next generation, TrendForce hopes to transform the sophisticate preference in the lighting world into a commonsense for more people to live in.

Taiwan LED packaging manufacturer Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT) performance for 2013 backlight orders is stable. Among the backlight sold, large sized backlights had the best performance. The company has a combined consolidated revenue from January of this year till August of NT$ 4.3 billion, an increase of 35.02 percent from last year. AOT pointed out that since the main markets are in China, Japan, and Korea, entering into the second half of this year customer backlight orders remained steady and has order visibility till the end of this year.

Vertically integrated Taiwanese LED manufacturer Lextar Electronics Corp. has maintained an utilization rate of 80% and order visibility of about 1-1.5 months. Affected by mediocre demands for large sized backlight orders in 3Q13, LED manufacturers are closely paying attention to potential orders from U.S. and Europe Christmas season and stock up prior to the Chinese Lunar New Year. Demands are much better for direct-type LED TV and small/mid sized backlight, according to Lextar. In comparison side-view type LED TV and notebook backlight demands remained low.

In this event, members of TNT discussed with participants on their survey and went out to detect lighting conditions in five areas in Taipei City. That was a typhoon night, yet these detectives didn’t be defeated by the wind and rain. Signaling the end of a patent battle lasting for almost three years, Korea’s Intellectual Property Tribunal (IPT) rejected an attempt to invalidate Dow Corning patent 10-976075. The patent is among Dow Corning’s rich intellectual property (IP) portfolio covering the company’s proprietary high refractive index (RI) phenyl-based optical silicone technology, which offers numerous high-value benefits to LED devices. These benefits include improved light output, excellent mechanical protection of LED components and enduring gas barrier properties for enhanced reliability. Handed down by the IPT on August 9, the decision in favor of Dow Corning significantly strengthens its intellectual property position for the technology in Korea, as well as in other key global LED manufacturing centers, including the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Europe.

With the maturing of the LED lighting market, medium-power LED demands have heated up. LED packaging manufacturers have recently begun entering into production of mid-to-high-powered EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) frames. A Canadian team has launched a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter for its Dodecado, a dodecahedron light with magnetic properties that allows it to be attached to another light, and rearranged or sculpted according to the user’s needs. The lights are scheduled for production in Oct. 2013 with first delivery scheduled in Dec. 2013. So far the Canadian team has raised CA$ 5,214 (US$ 5,069) for its project on Kickstarter.
