Power Integrations introduced a new reference design (DER-281) detailing an 85%-efficient, 15 W PAR38 downlight driver that delivers flicker-free dimming without the use of unreliable high-voltage electrolytic bulk capacitors.
Typical TRIAC dimmers were designed for incandescent lights that use an order of magnitude more power than LED lights of equivalent lumen output. The low current requirement of LED lights, especially when dimmed, can cause TRIACs to switch off unexpectedly or oscillate, creating an annoying flickering effect. Early-generation LED light...

Germany’s annual power consumption is approximately 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) or 500 trillion watt-hours, with lighting accounting for almost 12 percent of that figure.
Today, as much as 11.5 TWh or 20 percent of the electricity needed for lighting could be saved in Germany alone if incandescent lamps were consistently replaced by more energy-efficient LEDs. The potential saving is equivalent to the annual output of a large-scale power plant.
Over the coming three years, Germany’s seven partners of the “EnLight” (Energy Efficient and Intelligent...

IKEA Israel has discontinued its sale of incandescent bulbs, the first retailer in the Jewish State to do so. The company stopped selling the bulbs effective last Thursday, September 1. Instead, IKEA is restricting its lighting sales to items that are energy savers.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) use 75 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than the average incandescent light bulb.
Halogen bulbs consume 30 percent less energy, producing more lumens (lighting power) per watt than an incandescent bulb.
Solar lamps are energy savers as well, re...

Sources imform that Europe’s households have set off widely banning inefficient 60 watt light bulbs from 1 September 2011. The inefficient 60 watt light bulbs are being taken place of compact fluorescent light bulbs ( CFLs ) and light emitting diode lamps ( LEDs ). Halogen lights will remain on the shelves but are only marginally more efficient than incandescent bulbs. Europeans will be able to choose lamps which are at least 75% more efficient than old light bulbs and last at least seven times longer. According to Greenpeace EU energy policy adviser Frauke T...

In regard to Veeco’s Taiwan Technology Center for the LED industry, Justin K. Wang, the VP/General Manager of Veeco Instrument Inc, and Dr. Ming Jiunn Jou, the President of Epistar Corporation, indicated that the future of LED makers comprises both risks and opportunities. Therefore, they hoped that the Taiwanese government can establish specific standards and criteria for LED lighting products, in the hope of raising awareness of LED products in consumers. Furthermore, if the government is willing to enact subsidy policies for the LED industry, the profits they bring will largely exceed the investment they require. That being said, the Taiwanese government should more actively support the energy-saving and green energy industries, otherwise the Taiwanese LED industry may be surpassed by South Korea in 2011 and decline to the third place in the total capacity of LED.

By Teddy To, Product Manager and Phillip Havens, Segment Manager • Littelfuse, Inc. As LEDs find their way into more outdoor applications they are at higher risk for ESD and other electrical transients. HB LEDs (those with sapphire or SiC substrates and in the future AlN and GaN substrates) are especially susceptible, and when the first LED in a string fails, the whole string goes dark. Few engineers know all the considerations of specifying circuit protection for LED strings. For example, a recent category of devices, called open LED protecto...
