Liquidleds Light Fuses Old and New Technologies to Enter 40W Bulb Market

People automatically associate a yellow-orange halo glowing in the dark to warmth and romance. This is the appearance of incandescent light bulbs. Though beautiful, their harmful effect on the environment leaves countries deeply concerned. The EU in September 2012 even stopped incandescent light bulbs imports into Europe.

Although, LED lighting solves environmental issues faced today, many product performances cannot match incandescent light bulbs. This causes consumers to hesitate when purchasing LEDs. The LED industry has always been focused on finding a balance between lighting efficiency and market demands. Liquidleds, which has been established for six years, has finally made a breakthrough recently.

“How can we make purchasing lighting products as smooth and simple as possible for consumers?” said the company President Michael Yu, who has been in the HV LED industry for more than four years. LEDs still have some hurdles to get over before it is able to fully break into the CFL market, Over the past 20 years CFL has seen its market mature, have a healthy supply chain, and prices in a desirable range for consumers. Compared with traditional incandescent light bulbs that are flawed with overt energy consumption, LEDs are expected to fully replace them on the market. However from the retailers’ perspective, LED bulb luminosity is still not good enough and causes consumers to hesitate when purchasing light bulbs.

“In order to imitate traditional incandescent light bulb’s color, beam angle and ambiance, we have used multi-national patented glass packaging technology targeting the below 40W equiv. LED bulb market, such as candle light,” said Liquidleds Vice President David Huang. Many LED bulbs on the market use omni-directional and semi-directional bulb casings and heat sink components to produce bulbs, but a uniform light distribution is hard to achieve. However, glass blowing or molding techniques to make traditional bulbs outer glass casing is relatively mature. The light refracted through the glass gives off light rays that no other material can replace.

“Why can we not preserve good traditional bulb technology and craftsmanship?” said Huang. Through many years of patent strategy, Liquidleds has developed high temperature smelting techniques used for traditional glass bulb casings and bulb sockets. LED lighting source fixed inside a glass bulb not only allows LEDs to replace incandescent light bulbs but also energy efficient. Preserving the glass casing not only reduces consumer’s hesitation when purchasing lighting products, but also more aesthetic due to the artists’ technique. This technique has recently obtained manufacturing patents in Europe, U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and China and will be used by authorized manufacturers’ in the future to preserve LED glass packaging.

Yu pointed out that Liquidleds has gone through a second large product transformation. The company currently is staffed with skilled workers and has a good supply chain for bulb manufacturing. Core technology was developed during the product research process including wide angle beam structure with cross shape plating, LED glass bulb packaging technology, HV LED application technology, insulated high voltage design, heat dissipation ceramic substrate technology, and systemization to solve LED bulb light’s heat dissipation and power problems. The company switched to a more traditional method in order to provide LED light bulbs that are the same as traditional light bulbs. Liquidleds has officially acquired 96 global patents including patents for product capability, manufacturing, and outer design.

Compared to using the standard LED package method where components are packed horizontally onto an aluminum base, Liquidleds LED lighting design uses dimensional light structure with cross shape plating as its core optic design. The company developed a bulb design with no blind angles with a lighting effect similar to incandescent light bulbs. Liquidled’s small sized lights are already employed in some European restaurants and hotels and have acquired a lot of success.

“We have not abandoned HV LED application developments,” said Huang. Through HV LED technology application, the company’s products can simplify power design and no longer require the use of driver IC. Liquidleds also uses core technology on high voltage designs to prevent the danger of electrical shock.

Heat dissipation is still a battle for LED bulbs, especially for candle light bulbs, which are much smaller and have limited heat dissipation area. After the company simplified power designs it was able to increase heat dissipation area and add LED components on to MCPCB. This helps to solve the heat dissipation problem for candle light bulbs, controlling the bulb temperature at around 80-85 Celsius. “For a small startup company like us, patent strategy is our competitive strength,” said Hwang.

According to analysis in the aftermath of incandescent light bulbs exiting the market, 40 W equiv. and below glass light bulbs will be a blue sea market, said Yu. The company’s goal in entering into the 40w equiv. and below market is to not only to provide LED bulb products, but also produce a bulb with similar feel, luminosity, size and weight as an incandescent light bulb.

Over the past few years Liquidleds has cooperated with distributors from Germany, Australia, the Middle East, Macau and others. By providing clients small volume but diverse LED bulbs to choose from, the company is slowly expanding their presence in the market. The company even has products being used by well known hotels, helping to increase the company’s good reputation.

Entry into residential and general indoor lighting has become an inevitable trend for LED lighting applications. Liquidleds is using innovative thinking to create a new path in the highly competitive LED market.
