What is Blue Light? How is it harmful? Why is it used for smartphones and tablets?

Most parents use smartphones and tablets as virtual babysitters more than they would probably care to admit. Many adults also use these devices before falling asleep for reading, surfing the Internet, and watching movies and TV shows. Several studies have been conducted and are ongoing to look at what kind of long and short-term impact this might be having on eye health, sleep patterns and overall quality of life.

Some facts about Blue Light:
•        Devices with LED screens release a form of bright, blue light.
•        Blue light is desirable to smartphone and tablet manufacturers because of its efficiency and brightness combined with its very low power consumption.
•        Blue Light from phones and tablets can cause eye fatigue and digital eyestrain.
•        When it hits the eye lens, Blue Light refracts and causes other objects in our field of view to go in and out of focus. To compensate for this, most people squint which leads to eye fatigue and digital eyestrain.
•        Blue light is also proven to suppress melatonin levels associated with deep, peaceful sleep more than other forms of light.

What can we do to protect our children and ourselves from eye fatigue and digital eyestrain caused by Blue Light?

Tech Armor realizes that simply limiting exposure to smartphones and tablets for children and adults is easier said than done. In the real world people want real solutions. Solutions that will allow them to stay connected and enjoy their content when and how they want it. Solutions that will give them peace of mind knowing their children can continue using their favorite devices for education and fun without creating worry about endangering eye health.

“As a parent of a two-year old son, I understand the importance of keeping children’s eyes protected,” said Tech Armor’s Co-Founder and General Manager, Joseph Jaconi. “Tech Armor is known for innovating and pushing the boundaries of screen protection. We wanted to apply that same philosophy to digital eyestrain, which lead us to our groundbreaking RetinaShiled Blue Light Filter Screen Protectors. I couldn’t be more proud to introduce our RetinaShield line, and you can bet they’re on every device in my household that my son Joey interacts with!”
