Bamboo Lamps Put a Unique Spin on Environmentally Friendly Lighting

Chuang-Hsin Greenergy Co. takes a unique approach to environmentally friendly lighting design. Since 2013, the company has been producing LED lighting products using bamboo and wood as their main materials. Product designer Jack Tseng talks about his designs at Taiwan International Lighting Show 2014, which took place from March 20 to 23 at the Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei.

Allen: What is your design concept?

Tseng: We want to go back to nature, so we do not use plastic or any material that can cause pollution. That is why we use wood and bamboo. The light fixtures we use, such as our chandelier, are all made by hand. They are all very natural.

Tseng uses wood and bamboo to create his hand made LED lamps.

Allen: Do you find it difficult to work with wood and bamboo?

Tseng: Yes, it is very difficult because of the heat dissipation problem with LEDs. We cannot use high watt bulbs as the heat will increase. For example, our giraffe lamp, we need to put the LED and all of the components into the bamboo. The first problem we ran into was that the temperature was really high. So we needed to use materials to reduce the heat.

Allen: Why did you choose to use LEDs instead of traditional lighting?

Tseng: I choose LEDs because that is my main business.

Allen: Who are your main clients?

Tseng: We have a wide variety of clients. Some create red colored lights. We mainly sell to Japan. We also sell domestically and expanded to China this year. We hope to be able to sell to Europe and the U.S. We hope to become more international in the future.

Allen: What is the future direction of your designs?

Tseng: We hope to decrease the wattage of LEDs to make them more energy efficient. The second is to increase the luminosity.

In addition, the company has already designed several LED double tube lights that can be used for street lighting.
