BMW to Spread OLED Technology into Motorcycle Lighting

On the heels of BMW announcing its plans to introduce OLED lighting modules into automotive lighting, the company has also released news that they plan to do the same for motorcycle lighting, according to BMW Blog.

OLED technologies will be able to provide an additional range of benefits in vehicle lighting compared to LEDs. BMW Organic Light creates constant luminosity across the entire radiant angle, unlike with LED lamps which seem less bright when seen from the side. This is due to its thin-layered design which allows its backing material to be used directly as an electrical conductor.

OLED luminous density still requires more development. It is currently sufficient to be used in read lighting, but not yet bright enough for front lighting. Additionally, brake lights and indicator lights need reinforcing and are usually combined with LEDs, according to BMW Blog.

Combination OLED and LED lighting components will become standard in BMW motorcycles in the next two to three years. Lighting components that use OLED alone still require a lot more time to develop. “Assuming that their luminous density is significantly improved, OLEDs will possibly lead to completely redesigned, more attractive lamp units for BMW motorcycles,” said BMW Blog.
