Illuminate the Arts Kicks Off Fundraising Project to Keep Bay Bridge Lights On

Cree and Musco Lighting might be working closely to light up Bay Bridge in San Francisco, California, U.S. with 1,600 custom made LED lighting fixtures utilizing some 250,000 LED lights. However, the current lighting installation will only be on display till March 2015.

In response to an outpouring of community love for the artwork, which is slated to go dark forever in March 2015, Illuminate the Arts kicked off THE BAY LIGHTS US $12 Million Will Keep ‘Em Lit Through 2026 fundraising campaign on The Bay Lights First Anniversary, March 5, 2014. With 44 days to go, the Crowdtilt funding project has currently raised US $185,997. Visit the fundriaing project website

What if the San Francisco Bay Bridge was a canvas for light? That was the seminal question that ultimately sparked a diverse community to action and led to the creation of the world’s largest LED light sculpture. Just 2.5 years after the question was asked, the Bay Area and the world welcomed a new privately funded, public work of art by internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal, reflected across 25,000 energy-efficient LED lights on the western span of the Bay Bridge.

THE BAY LIGHTS has altered the economic, cultural and spiritual framework of the Bay Area and has become a world-renowned icon for public art. From March 5, 2013 through March 2015, The Bay Lights will be seen by over 50 million people in the Bay Area alone, with billions more worldwide seeing it in the media and online. It is infusing significant resources into the region, creating jobs and contributing to local businesses. An independent economic impact assessment conservatively estimates US$ 97 million will be added to the local economy as a result of this project.
