Taisei Corporation, Okamura Corporation and MHI to Jointly Develop OLED Desk Lamps for Offices

Taisei Corporation, Okamura Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) have jointly developed OLED desk lamps for office use. The newly developed OLED desk lamps will be installed in a Net-Zero Energy Building (ZEB) verification facility that Taisei Corporation is constructing in the city of Yokohama. The OLED lamps, which emit soft light over a wide area, will be tested on an office-wide basis and are expected to reduce energy consumption while creating a more comfortable work environment.

The Japanese government has called for new public buildings to be ZEB-compliant by 2020, and as lighting accounts for approximately 20% of office building electricity consumption, it is a key target of energy conservation efforts. The newly developed OLED desk lamps are expected to provide sufficient brightness over work space, and help save electricity consumption by enabling reduction of overall ambient light.

Conventional energy-saving lighting plans have employed desk lamps together with reduced ceiling light. Users have found, however, that lighting sources such as LEDs can dazzle workers' eyes and cast shadows, creating a less comfortable workplace environment. Although the thinner construction and softer light of OLED panels have recently led to their increased use for exhibition and display purposes, the newly developed OLED desk lamps are the first to meet the brightness, color rendering and service life requirements of office use.

The new lamps incorporate state-of-the-art OLED panels manufactured by Lumiotec, a group company of MHI. In accordance with concepts and specifications developed by Taisei Corporation, which will ensure high-quality illumination while minimizing energy consumption, design and manufacturing of the lamp units are being handled by Okamura Corporation.

With a view to creating new and more comfortable workplace environments, Taisei Corporation, Okamura Corporation and MHI will introduce the OLED lamps at the ZEB verification facility that Taisei Corporation is constructing at the Technology Center in Totsuka, Yokohama.

Features

  1. OLED panels that meet the world's highest performance standards: The new OLED panels are mass-produced using proven inline deposition technologies, and meet the world's highest performance standards for brightness, service life and color rendering in office settings.
  2. OLED desk lamps with a flat, thin design: The desk lamps take advantage of the thinness of OLED panels and will be offered in two types to meet various requirements of users: one for desktop installation and one for installation on desktop panels.
  3. Comfortable, quality and energy-saving environment, realized by OLED lighting: Entire rooms within the ZEB verification facility to be completed in June by Taisei Corporation will be equipped with OLED desk lamps that emit soft, glare-free light. The quality of the workplace environment created by the OLED desk lamps in combination with natural daylight, ceiling light and indirect light will then be evaluated for energy conservation, glare reduction and overall ambient brightness.
