Innovative Apple Watch Unveiled at Special Event

After finishing the grand introduction to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus at the Special Event in Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California, U.S., Apple CEO Tim Cook created a new climax with Steve Jobs classical statement “One more thing…” prior to unveiling the long anticipated wearable smartwatch device “Apple Watch”.

The device put an end to market rumors that speculated the new device would be christened as the iWatch, OLED touch panels were also nowhere to be seen on the new device. However, some predictions were accurate, including the sapphire substrate glass display, and sensors embedded to the back of the watch. The watch also used the scratch resilient sapphire crystal glass as sensor covers.

Another market rumor proved true, was the Apple Watch came in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm to be precise. Apple has launched three smartwatch models including the stainless steel “Apple Watch,” anodized aluminum watch cover “Apple Watch Sport” and luxury 18K gold or rose gold “Apple Watch Edition.” The Apple Watch Sport is the only display that was strengthened with Ion-X glass, while the other two models all use sapphire glass. There are many options for consumers to choose from when it comes to the Apple Watch, whether it is the device size, model type, material, wrist strap, or watch cover. No wonder Apple claims the Apple Watch is their most personalized device.

A requirement for any wearable device would be health, sport and other fitness features. The Apple Watch comes with an in-built Activity and Workout application. Specially designed heart rate sensors are embedded in the back of the watch, which all use infrared, visible LED lights or photoreceptors for detecting heartbeat. Additionally, an accelerometer with a customized sensor is capable of tracking body movement and calorie consumption using the iPhone’s GPS and Wi-Fi system.

Four LEDs are used in the sensors on the back of the Apple Watch.

Apple has created many innovative designs for the Apple Watch including Watch OS, force-sensitive, retina display, pressure sensors to determine areas touched on the panel, and a multi-functional Digital Crown. Other features include a linear touch sensor feedback Taptic Engine and more, which all show the amount of thought Apple has put into the design. Apple has also developed App modules, WatchKit, for App designers, so users will have more software options in the future.

Apple Watch comes with a fairly high price tag of US $ 349, and will not be hitting the markets till 2015. Expensive price is one of the flaws in the new wearable device, and since it only supports Apple iPhones it would not work on other smartphone systems.

Will Apple’s new wearable device be able to beat competing devices? Will it create new consumer demands? All these still require further observations.
