Molecular Glasses Files Novel NONcrystallizable™ Organic Semiconductors Patents for OLED Applications

Molecular Glasses, a division of Molaire Consulting LLC has filed for patent protection for its new class of organic semiconductor materials for OLED and other organic electronic applications.

The filing converts prior provisional applications into full U.S. and PCT patent filings, but also incorporates additional proprietary aspects of the Company’s material and process that were recently developed.

The new patent filings cover the preparation of novel noncrystallizable hole-transporting, electron-transporting, ambipolar, and luminescent composition of matter, including procedures to ensure their purity.

Organic light emitting diode (OLED) is poised to challenge light emitting diode (LED), and liquid crystal (LCD) in flat panel displays, flexible displays and lighting applications. OLED display has an advantage over LCD with its high response speed, wide viewing angle and high contrast in dark settings. However two major challenges are slowing down OLED:

Production costs must decrease. Traditional thermal OLED production is too expensive. Solution processes for spin, roll-to-roll, slot die, or inkjet coating are required. However the traditional small molecules used for thermal deposition tend to crystallize in solvents.

Device longevity needs to improve.

They have developed their novel noncrystallizable materials to address these problems. Their NONcrystallizable™ OLED materials will bring OLED display manufacturing cost to levels lower than that of LCD displays by enabling solution processing. It is projected that solution processing will reduce manufacturing cost of a 55” OLED display by 44.4% compared to the traditional thermal evaporation process. In addition Molecular Glasses’ NONcrystallizable™ organic semiconductors will provide the industry many new benefits:

Easily tuned charge-transporting properties for balanced electron and hole transport resulting in highly efficient devices
Reduced emitter aggregation for higher internal conversion
Increased dopant concentration in compatible and noncrystallizable hosts for longer-live devices
Dual Solvent and vacuum coatability for manufacturing flexibility
Green solvent solubility to protect the environment
Efficient single layer devices for lower cost

“We are very excited about this new technology and the potential contribution to the advancement of OLED,” notes Mike Molaire, CEO and Founder of Molecular Glasses. “We are building a strong patent portfolio and looking for strong partners to bring the technology to market in a reasonable time.”
