Finding New LED Lighting Business Opportunities in Thailand at Upcoming EcoLight Tech Asia 2015

Soaring LED lighting penetration rates, followed by the maturation of LED lighting technology. Although, market demands have soared, LED lighting demand growth in mature markets have eased, due to intense pricing competitions. As a result, LED manufacturers are turning their focus to emerging markets including the establishment of ASEAN Economic Community in Southeast Asia later this year, and China’s recent One Belt, One Road policies have driven large scale infrastructure investments. This has placed LED lighting market demands under the market lime light.

The Southeast Asian LED lighting market value reached US $1.12 million in 2014, according to LEDinside estimations. This year, the market is still likely to expand steadily because of rapid population growth, favorable government policies and an abundance of private-sector LED lighting projects. It is projected the LED lighting market value in the ASEAN region will increase 36% Year-on-Year (YoY) to US $1.5 billion in 2015.

Among Southeast Asian countries, the Thailand Lighting Market is one with great market potential. LEDinside estimated LED lighting market reached 10 billion Baht (US$ 335 Million) in 2015. Thai government projections place LED market Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) to grow 30% in the next five years, to bring the total market value from US $900 million to US $1 billion.

Meanwhile, entrepreneurs from other countries including Taiwan, China, Japan and South Korea are seeing the light in Thailand as an economic, trade and transportation hub in Asian markets. They have increased their investments in the Thailand lighting industry since 2011, while targeting domestic markets, and the ASEAN region. LEDinside took the opportunity at an EcoLight Tech Asia 2015 event to visit several local manufacturers to better understand the local LED lighting market, including TP Halo and Eve Lighting.

TP Halo’s LED’s market position is in the mid to high-end market. LED quality is also a top priority for the company, which is reflected in their choice of high quality Epistar LED chips for most of their package products. Adhesives used in the LEDs are mostly imported from Japan, and the company uses gold wire bonding in most of its LED package products. TP Halo has a comprehensive product portfolio of LED chips including 2835, 3528, 5050, 1206, 0805 and 0603 LEDs, which were released on the market.

Besides LED package products, TP Halo is also utilizing its technology know-how in the upstream LED market, and applying it to LED lighting applications to meet Thailand lighting market demands. This includes LED streetlights, LED tube lights, and the company has even developed mosquito repellent LED bulbs for the local market. Since all of its LED products are made in Thailand, the company has acquired many local government projects and OEM orders. “Following growing demands in the local market, we intend to increase local revenue by 30% by 2016,”said the company’s Managing Director Howard Huang.
