UK County to Switch 16,000 Streetlights to LED by 2017

As several counties in the UK plan and execute LED streetlights conversion, Cumbria County, the county that is known for its natural beauty, also has LED switch plan for up to 16,000 high pressure and low pressure sodium lanterns within the county.

Cooperating with Lumicom, a non- profit producer compliance scheme that provide guidance of non- household market entry and WEEE regulations.

The major project includes the disposal and recycling of the conventional streetlights and the conversion to LED ones. Started from 2014, the three- year project is expected to be fully executed by 2017. The Cumbria CC project will save up to GBP £430,000 (US $650,289) per year with LED streetlights.

In the first stage (2014-2015), 2,500 conventional streetlights were removed and recycled via the Lumicom WEEE recycling system.

The current stage (2015-2016) for collection are reported at 5,600 with a further 2,800 fixtures estimated for collection and conversion by November 2015.

Thus, approximately 12,000 streetlights are expected to be collected throughout the period from 2016 to 2017. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2017.
