Will EDM Parties Be The New Niche Market for LEDs?

Traditionally, LEDs are wielded as glow stick replacements at concerts, or found on banners and boards made by fans. Some artists will occasionally wear LED dresses to light up the show, but a new startup is catching on the trend of gloving at EDM rave parties.

Brian Lim, an entrepreneur who made an appearance at Shark Tank, literally was given an offer of US $ 1 million and 5% stake by the billionaire judge panel by wiggling his fingers in a pair of color changing LED gloves, according to reports by CNN and The Guardian.

The U.S. TV reality show, Shark Tank, gives startup a chance to acquire the financing they need to back their business. One of the Sharks, Robert Herjavec, told Lim he’s potentially the best entrepreneur they have had on the show, reported the Guardian..

How the LED gloves were able to attract massive financing is beyond LEDinside’s understanding, but apparently there is a budding market for these special gloves at EDM concerts and parties in the U.S.

Gloving is a personal performance catching on among the youth culture in the U.S. that involves a lot of hand movement that participants at rave parties give to one another.

Lim first tapped into gloving when his girlfriend wanted a pair of these gloves to wear to a concert six years ago, but found there were few suppliers available at the time. The gloves she got cost US $110 and took an extensively long period to deliver.

When Lim realized there were few LED glove suppliers, he spent US $100 to make his own gloves, and was soon selling them in the back of his truck and on Craiglist.

He became profitable in a week, and in the following eight months achieved US $250,000 in sales.

Eventually he quit his job with Deloitte in 2010 to found EmazingLights the same year. His company has grown exponentially from a one man start-up in 2009 to employing 52 employees as of date.

The company’s projected revenue for this year is set at US $13 million this year, and his LED glove product prices range from US $30 to US $130.

"EDM is estimated to be a $6.9 billion industry," said Lim. "It's huge outside of the U.S. and it's becoming more popular here now."

Lim hopes the trend that has caught on in U.S. will spread to other global regions including parts of Europe, Philippines, Japan and Australia where gloving has been introduced.
