Fairborn City in Ohio to Upgrade to LED Streetlights

News Source:

The City of Fairborn located in Ohio, U.S. has signed a deal with Miami Valley Lighting to operate and maintain streetlights, after the council approved the plan Monday.

More than 2,400 mercury vapor luminaires and high pressure sodium lights will be swapped with LED lights.

The transformation will be necessary because the mercury vapor luminaires will be phased out after 2016. The 9-year contract starts from Jan. 1, 2016 and will end in 2025.

“Something needed to happen with this contract regardless to do a change out,” said Bales. “The technology with LED has come a long way within the last couple of years and so we feel very strongly that LED is the way of the future. The warranty and quality of the light is just great.”

City officials have proposed not to change the poles in the streetlight upgrade, especially if the pole is in good condition. Miami Valley Lighting proposed switching all the wooden poles with aluminum ones, but city officials requested to keep wooden replacements to reduce costs.

The first five years of the contract will help the city save money.
