Bangkokians Question Necessity of City Hall Decorative LED Lighting Project

Thailand capital Bangkok’s large city hall LED lighting upgrade project has attracted criticism from netizens, who have questioned city officials’ decision to spend emergency budget on 5 million LED bulbs, reported Thai Visa News.

The Office of the Auditor-General told Thai PBS, they found the City Administration’s illumination tunnel project, intended as a New Year gift and tourism attraction did not require emergency budget if it had been planned months in advance.

Auditor-General Phisit Leelavachiropas observed the procurement of the supplies for the project was done before the City Administration had announced a winning bidder for the project.

The project spent 40 million Thai baht (US $1.11 million) to decorate the City Hall’s tunnel-shape structure with 5 million LED bulbs that will be used for 3D lighting exhibition during the upcoming New Year festival.

Many netizens have questioned whether the project was worth the investment.
