LG is reported to have filed applications in the EU for three trademarks related to Micro LED displays. The trademarks are XµLED, SµLED, and XLµLED, as Gsmarena.com carried in a report.
The intention of LG choosing ‘µLED’ over Micro LED is unknown, yet it is confirmed the trademarks are likely to be used for smartphone displays.
Features such as high resolution and power saving capability make Micro LED suited for displays of wearable devices, head-up displays (HUDs), and head-mounted displays (HMDs).
In January, Samsung also filed a trademark application regarding the development of Micro LED with the Korean Intellectual Property Office. It launched The Wall, the 146” Micro LED modular TV, at CES 2018.
Apple also reportedly plans to replace OLED with Micro LED as the display material of its wearable devices. It is estimated that LG Display will suffer a loss of KRW 230 billion (approximately USD 218 million) if Apple Watch changes its OLED display with a Micro LED display, a Japanese press source reported.
