According to NEMA, the standard was developed for use by roadway and area lighting manufacturers, municipalities, and utilities. The new standard is going to help the industry to use the Zhaga Book 18 interface for installation or removal of various types of sensors on outdoor LED lighting luminaires.

Cities and town ships around the world continue to retrofit streetlights into LEDs not only to save energy but also as part of the smart city infrastructure. Connected lighting, sensing application and data collection enable city management teams to better monitor and notice the needs of users and residence for providing corresponding services and functions.
