BOE Develops VR, AR and MR Technologies with Focus on the Metaverse

The concept of metaverse signifies a revolution in market economies. As the term goes viral, LEDinside—the optoelectronic research division of research company TrendForce—estimates that social media, gaming, content creation, virtual economy and industrial applications will be the focus of development in the coming years. In addition to enhanced semiconductor performance and expanded coverage of low-latency high-speed networks, AR/VR device penetration will be a key factor for metaverse development.

As a leading multinational firm providing innovative IoT solutions, BOE has incorporated the concept of metaverse into its business. On November 26, investors inquired the company about its metaverse strategies. The Chinese tech giant emphasized that smart VR, AR, and MR (mixed reality) end products are crucial to the creation of metaverse, while display technologies with constant advances serve as a foundation that connects such products in reality to the virtual world.

Currently, BOE provides representative display solutions for smart VR/AR/MR devices, including high PPI monitors, Fast LCDs and Si-based OLED displays with ultra-high resolution and contrast.

Meanwhile, BOE is developing Mini LED technologies to improve the performance of Fast LCD in contrast, refresh rate and brightness. Additionally, the company incorporates HDR to its Mini LED technologies to better meet the ultra-high definition requirement of near-eye displays in VR products.

BOE has mass produced 3.2-inch Fast LCD products featuring Mini LED backlights, 2880×2880 pixels and 1200ppi. The display maker also cooperated with chip and optical companies to launch a 0.7-inch FHD reference design solution and developed a Si-based OLED display boasting 5644ppi, ultra-high resolution and 120+Hz refresh rate. At the same time, BOE has provided various products for customers that are top companies in their industries.

BOE specified that as per their clients’ requirements, it will continue offering Fast LCD, Mini/Micro LED and Si-based OLED solutions.

Reportedly, BOE has several subsidiaries specializing in VR, AR, and MR sectors, including Yunnan BOE and Mianyang BOE.

Specifically, Yunnan BOE (short for Yunnan Invensight Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd.) is a joint venture that BOE established in 2017 with Yunnan OLiGHTEK Opto-Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., Central Yunnan Industrial Development Group Co., Ltd. and Kopin Technology (Shenzhen) Company Limited. The subsidiary specializes in the production, sales and R&D of Micro OLED components; its 8-inch and 12-inch production lines have begun operating with a capacity that can meet market demand overall.

As LEDinside predicts, global shipments of VR and AR devices will soar to 12.03 million units in 2022 with an annual growth rate of 26.4%. In such a large market, BOE will see tremendous growth in its VR, AR and MR businesses.
