Nichia and GE Lighting enter into Cross License Agreement

News Source:

Nichia Corporation and Savant Technologies LLC, known as GE Lighting, a Savant company, announced that they have entered into a cross-license agreement. Under the agreement, Savant will be licensed under Nichia’s patents on filament LED lightbulbs, including Nichia’s U.S. Patent No. 9,752,734. Nichia will be licensed to supply LEDs containing potassium fluoride silicon, or PFS phosphor, in the residential and retail market channels. The patents licensed to Nichia under the cross license include U.S. Patent Nos. 7,497,973 and 7,453,195.

This cross license confirms the value of each companies’ patents covering lighting products. Nichia’s patents cover Savant’s popular GE-brand “Vintage Style” LED lightbulbs, which combine energy efficient and long-lasting LED technology with traditional Edison-bulb appearance. The patents licensed from Savant in the consumer field cover Nichia LEDs that have a unique narrow-band red emission, which exhibits excellent color rendering and efficiency.

With this cross license, customers of both companies will benefit as well. Savant’s customers will continue to have access to high-quality LED lighting in a variety of styles. Nichia’s PFS LEDs will now be available for all general illumination markets, including the residential/retail channels, and customers in these markets will benefit from the high color quality, efficiency, and value of Nichia’s PFS LEDs.

Specific licensing terms are confidential.
