LG Display delays new 10.5G factory for 'super-sized' OLED TVs

News Source:

LG Display has once again delayed the construction of a new 10.5G factory – up from the current two 8.5G factories – that is intended for cheaper and larger OLED TV panels.

Announced in 2017, LG Display had planned to construct its first 10.5-generation (10.5G) factory to mass-produce large-sized LCD panels and later OLED panels. The display maker subsequently decided to skip LCD and move straight to OLED production, postponing the opening of the 10.5G factory.

LG Display is currently mass-producing OLED panels at two 8.5-generation (8.5G) factories. A 10.5G factory would allow it to produce cheaper large-sized OLED panels and even larger OLEDs than the current 97-inch panel.

Delayed, again
LG Display has once again delayed the construction of its 10.5G factory.

- "As a large-sized OLED market leader, LG Display decided to invest in 10.5th generation OLED production facilities to improve production efficiency and to explore new markets with its super-sized OLED panels," LG Display said in a written statement to FlatpanelsHD.

- "However, the market environment has changed significantly due to the unexpected outbreak of COVID-19 and wider global macroeconomic uncertainties. These circumstances have created an environment in which it is difficult to carry out planned investments on schedule."

Korean media are reporting that LG Display is delaying the investment deadline to 2028, but LG Display did not confirm this timeline in its statements to FlatpanelsHD. The 10.5G factory could still open sooner at lower capacity. Investments in display panel factories are usually carried out in phases.

- "Accordingly, the investment deadline will be extended and related details will be re-disclosed in the event of future changes," added LG Display.
