JBD Red MicroLEDs Microdisplay Brightness Surpass 1 Million Nits

News Source:

JBD, a leading MicroLED display manufacturer, has announced that the brightness of its 0.13-inch red MicroLED chips has exceeded 1 million nits, once again setting a new record in the industry.

Boosting red brightness has been the toughest challenge in MicroLEDs. Since its founding, JBD has focused on hybrid integrated semiconductor tech and insisted on AlGaInP for red LEDs. With the ideal bandgap for red, AlGaInP is the most mature material for high-performance red LEDs.

JBD's achievement on record high red MicroLED brightness is the result from multiple technique breakthroughs including advanced Epitaxial material growth technology, Non-radiative recombination suppression technology and Beam shaping technology.

The key to enhancing red MicroLED brightness is minimizing the size effect with next-gen ultra-thin AlGaInP epitaxy and excellent passivation technology. JBD's red MicroLED pixel pitch is only 4um while the emitter size is even<2um, facing high challenge on efficiency. The years of effort on improving epitaxy greatly reduced Effects of non-radiative recombination on the MicroLED surface, slowing down the efficiency degradation below 5um emitter size. Combined with excellent passivation with new materials and process, the finalized design further break through the size effect barrier and significantly boost internal quantum efficiency.

Advances in pixel optics also plays a key role in brightness engineering. The new structure not only increases light extraction efficiency through an enhanced transmission film system, but also further optimizes the microlens to remarkedly improve collimation and brightness. Altogether, JBD has achieved product-level million-nit panels under normal driving conditions.

JBD's red MicroLED performance has stayed ahead the whole industry with breakthroughs over years. Hitting 300,000 nits in 2021, 500,000 nits in 2022 and 750,000 nits in February 2023 of its red panels, JBD now enable mass production of its Hummingbird full-color optical engine with red brightness exceeding 1 million nits.

The red brightness milestone brings JBD's "Hummingbird" X-cube polychrome projector to a new level. With its ultra-compact 0.4 cc size, 1 g weight and 200 mW low power consumption, the Hummingbird has distinguished advantages for consumer AR displays. Coupled with 1 million nits blue and 5 million green display, the newest red display can boost the Hummingbird output flux from 3-4 lm to over 5 lm, reaching an ultra-high 12.5 lm/cc luminous efficiency.

The 1 million nits red breakthrough proves JBD's leadership in MicroLED industry and validates its AlGaInP red LED approach. JBD will push out its mass produced "Hummingbird" optical engines to boost consumer AR glasses market, More products based on the engine will launch soon.
