Gensler designs video wall that ‘looks like an exploding TV’

News Source:

The industrial-style deconstructed video wall, which has been designed like a circuit board, required Nanolumens to develop a new product topology for its Nixel curved LED technology.

A new innovation hub has been fitted out with a deconstructed video wall display that looks like a circuit board.

The concept was to have a 16:9 display splayed out from the main display, so that it appeared as if a TV had exploded. It needed to have a clean aesthetic, but also seem industrial in style, with exposed parts and cabling.

Gensler’s Jeian Jeong and Michael Schneider asked LED display manufacturer Nanolumens if its Nixel topology could be used as an independent display.

Dan Rossborough, director of Nanolumens’ Special Projects Group, took four months to develop a new product topology for Nixel, which would serve as the base of this design.

A mock-up of a mitred chassis on a single Nixel was created to emulate independent 'orphan Nixels' – a phrase coined by Rossborough to describe the satellite displays that were independent of the main video display.

A 'daughter board' was developed that could be affixed to the back of the Nixels. A receive card was also attached so that it could be treated as if it were a full array.

During the design phase, a 2.4m-wide and 0.6m-high mock-up was developed at Gensler’s lab as proof of concept. Nanolumens also hired a media artist to aid in the content mapping of the video wall.

The stand-alone Nixels have their own chassis and onboard data – each programmed with its own offset on two coordinated 4K content rasters (32:9 aspect ratio) – to allow them to be arranged in any array.

The main display body has been mitred on all sides to make the array appear to be floating.

The project utilises Nanolumens’ 1.5mm pixel pitch Nixel LED modules in an array that is about 5.4m wide. The main video wall section is 16:9, as are each of the circuit-board-style 'wings'.
