[News] Google Unveils Micro LED AR Glasses Prototype

In May, during its I/O conference, Google showcased a multimodal AI project named Project Astra. This project can recognize various types of content, including audio, video, and text, and also has some storage capabilities. During the demonstration, Google displayed how Project Astra operates on a prototype of AR glasses.

Recently, Google’s DeepMind website opened a testing channel for Project Astra. The company plans to release the AI- and AR-equipped prototype glasses to a select group of users for further usage testing.
Reportedly, the AR glasses prototype runs on the Android XR operating system, a new platform developed by Google for visual computing. This platform is designed to support the development of devices such as glasses and headsets. The glasses’ features include real-time translation, location memory, and the ability to read text without requiring a smartphone.
In terms of display technology, the AR glasses are equipped with Micro LED microdisplays provided by Raxium.

Founded in 2017, Raxium specializes in developing monolithic RGB Micro LED displays for smart devices such as AR/VR. Google announced its acquisition of Raxium in 2022, reportedly for $1 billion.

Google has stated that it currently has no plans to release the AR glasses prototype to consumers. However, it envisions future AR glasses in various stylish and comfortable designs for consumers, with seamless integration with other Android devices.
AR glasses powered by the Android XR system will be able to unleash the capabilities of Gemini with just a simple press, providing features such as navigation, translation, or message summaries, all without needing a smartphone.
