LED backlight penetration slower than expected, only up to 10% this year

It’s reported that LED backlight penetration will not be as quick as previously expected, it will only reach 10 percent this year. Previously LCD panel makers projected 15 to 20 percent penetration in the market this year.

According to the industry insiders, the low cost of CCFL backlight units as the primary cause. CCFL backlight units reportedly cost 70 percent less than LED-based backlight units. Despite a significant drop in LED prices this year, the sales of LED backlight units for notebooks were slower than expected. CCFL backlight oversupply caused unit prices to also drop this year. It’s estimated that it has forced notebook venders to delay the introduction of some of their LED backlit notebooks.
