Arrow and Suppliers Support LED Luminaire Design Competition at UC Davis

Arrow Electronics, Inc. and key suppliers of lighting components including Magtech Industries,OPTEK Technology, SRAM Opto Semiconductors and Tyco Electronics will sponsor the LED Luminaire Design Competition in association with the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) at the University of California, Davis.

Students will design, develop and prototype a fully working LED-based lighting fixture using a development kit of products provided by Arrow and its suppliers.

Designs will be evaluated on the creative use of LED technology, and overall functionality and design, by a panel of judges to include CLTC and supplier representatives. Winning designs will be displayed at LIGHTFAIR International 2009, in the Arrow Electronics booth (#2575), May 5-7 in New York City.

Professor Michael Siminovitch, director of CLTC, notes that design education is more than the evaluation of the end result as learning occurs through the creative process. Lighting industry sponsors fuel the imaginative potential of tomorrow's lighting designers with their support and collaboration. The sponsored technology donations provide students the opportunity to experiment first-hand with solid-state lighting materials and to discover their potential applications in a creative studio environment. This competition enables industry partners and UC Davis to collaborate in the education of future designers, architects and engineers.
