ASP of 40W equivalent LED light bulb slid below US$20 in U.S.

According to the latest survey conducted by LEDinside, the LED research division of TrendForce, the global LED light bulb price continued to dip in 12’Feb, but the downtrend has curbed – the ASP of 40W equivalent LED light bulb merely dropped 0.1%, while the ASP plummeted by 19% in the United States to below US$20. The global ASP of 60W equivalent LED light bulb dropped to US$33.6, and the price downtrend was most prominent in the United States and Japan.

ASP of 40W Equivalent LED light bulb in U.S. Plummeted Considerably

TrendForce research indicates, the global ASP of 40W equivalent LED light bulb dipped modestly in February to US$19.6. The price went up 7% in South Korea, which was mainly attributed to the inventory closeout of certain products. The lowest end-market price rebounded to above US$10. Moreover, the latest addition to the price survey, Germany, the ASP was approximately US$24, which was relatively high. Additionally, the ASP in Japan and the United Kingdom dropped 2% and 1%, respectively, while the ASP in the U.S. underwent drastic downturn to US$18.

Price Downtrend of 60W Equivalent LED light bulb Persisted

As for the global ASP of 60W equivalent LED light bulb, it dipped about 5% in February. The ASP in the United States and Japan dipped 14% and 5%, respectively. The major reason behind the price downturn in both countries was that certain products’ low prices remained while certain high-end products’ prices dropped. The amount of 60W equivalent LED light bulbs in the United Kingdom increased, and the ASP dropped by 2%, still above US$40. Furthermore, the ASP of 60W equivalent LED light bulbs in South Korea stayed flat, because the major companies’ products still maintained the same prices.

Perspectives from TrendForce

According to TrendForce, Toshiba launched its E-CORE LDT7 series in 1Q12. The 7W product has a beam angle of 300 degree. The price is high, but it is a wide beam product, the same with Mitsubishi Electric’s LDA8 and LDA11 whose beam angle reaches 330 degree. Due to their high prices, the wide beam products’ market acceptance remains to be seen. However, the wide beam angle makes the products a superior choice in residential and indoor space.

TrendForce points out that the ASPs of 40W and 60W equivalent LED light bulbs plunged drastically in the U.S. in 12’Feb – the ASP of 40W equivalent LED light bulb dipped to US$18, making U.S. another competitive market besides South Korea. It indicates that U.S. started to be more aggressive in the price war in the LED lighting market.

As for other regions, the ASP of LED light bulb stayed flat in 12’Feb. In Asia, the price downtrend from January did not persist and the price became stable. The ASP of 40W equivalent LED light bulb in South Korea even went up slightly. TrendForce indicates that the amount of LED light bulbs that meet the quality and technology criteria has been steadily increasing. Instead of blindly cutting prices in order to acquire market share, companies around the world have been striving to keep the prices stable and putting more emphasis on developing unique features and increasing price/performance ratio in the meantime.
