38,000 LEDs Decorate Philadelphia's South Street Bridge

South Street Bridge, a Philadelphia landmark for nearly 90 years, was recently reconstructed. The new, award-winning bridge features four towers, adorned with 38,000 LEDs. The LEDs form dynamic mosaics that honor the city’s mural arts tradition, beautify the city’s skyline, and act as symbols of the Philadelphia’s evitalization. Lighting and control products from Traxon & e:cue were used to illuminate the South Street Bridge. Traxon’s flexible, outdoor-rated Dot XL-3 RGB fixtures satisfied all of the project requirements, including exceptional brightness and multi-media capabilities; these fixtures were produced in custom pixel pitches and string lengths to accommodate the unique architecture of the bridge and ensure a uniform look. The custom Dot XL-3 RGB fixtures were applied to panels, installed on the bridge towers, and connected to e:cue’s Lighting Control Engine (LCE). The Lighting Control Engine manages the entire installation, orchestrating brilliantly programmed shows. At night, the South Street Bridge installation is highly visible. The four towers of the bridge, each of which is independently controllable, showcase slowly changing images, lively animation, and abstract effects. In the future, the city of Philadelphia intends to coordinate the light show with music, create graphics to recognize holidays and city events, and possibly allow local artists to design lighting shows.
