Lakeland Community College Uses Lighting Solution from Acuity Brands to Meet Key Performance and Energy-Efficiency Goals

RT Series LED luminaires equipped with nLight controlsare installed in the new 40,000 square-foot Holden University Center.

Lakeland Community College (“Lakeland”) in Kirtland, Ohio, selected an integrated lighting solution from Acuity Brands, Inc.(NYSE: AYI) to meet key performance and energy-efficiency objectives for its new Holden University Center (“Center”). The integrated lighting solution installed in the 40,000 square-foot facility consisted of 483 Lithonia Lighting® RT Series LED luminaires equipped with nLight® controls.Lakelandhas achievedenergy and maintenance savings, while also providingan advanced learning environment. The Center’s smart classrooms now include adjustable illumination levels for use of projectors, video monitors and smart screens.


“After considering all of Lakeland’s performance, efficiency and control requirements, LED lighting became the obvious choice,” said Tony Bledsoe, senior project designer, Tec Inc. Engineering & Design, who facilitated the lighting project. “We reviewed competitive products for this application andthe Lithonia Lighting RT Series LED luminaires integrated with nLight® controlsfrom Acuity Brands separated itself as the best solution.”

By installing more energy-efficient lighting and controls, the Holden University Center haslowered its lighting energy consumption to0.689 watts per square foot, greatly surpassing the lighting/energy code requirement of 1.2 watts per average square foot in the building.This reduced energy consumption level contributed in the facility applying for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED)certification.

Lakeland has been recognized for its energy conservation among higher education facilities in North America, winning a 2010 Bellwether Award, which recognizes outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future. Additionally, theCollege was acknowledgedby the Central Association of College & UniversityBusiness Officers in 2010 for best practices associated with its energy conservation programs.
