【CES 2020】Improved Backlight Technology Upgrades Display Performance

Ever since OLED joined the battle field of TV display, the technology revolutes the industry with its high contrast brought by the self-emitting feature. Because the supply chain of OLED panel is tightly controlled by Korean suppliers, panel manufacturers and TV brands are trying to adopt new technology to fight against OLED panel.

Since last year, several industry players have teamed up to launch LCD display lit with novel backlight technology to compete with OLED. A wide range of applications were demonstrated in major international events and CES 2020 is no exception. Follow LEDinside to take a further look into the trend of backlight technology.

Mini LED Backlight Solutions as Major Focus

LED backlight is a mature technology which has been adopted for years. Mini LED backlight is to further miniaturize LEDs and place them evenly behind LCD displays with local dimming function.

Many TV brands built partnerships LCD panel producer to exhibit Mini LED backlight product. Chinese TV brands like TCL and Changhong both showed their enthusiasm in Mini LED backlight by presenting related series products.

At TCL’s booth, the company placed Mini LED backlight TV next to OLED TV. LEDinside observed that Mini LED backlight TV delivers better brightness and comparable color saturation compared to OLED.

TCL’s Mini LED backlight products adopt COST’s LCD display and Refond’s Mini LED backlight technology. TCL also presented active matrix and passive matrix Mini LED backlight solutions. The staff told LEDinside that passive matrix Mini LED backlight products are planned to enter the market this year. And the mass production schedule for active matrix Mini LED TVs will be announced soon.

SONY as the industry pioneer in direct backlight and local dimming technology unveiled its proprietary full array LED backlight technology.

On the other hand, LG Display demonstrated Mini LED backlight technology with a 80-inch 8K panel in its private room. The Mini LED backlight TV can reach a brightness of 4000nits.

Dual Cell Backlight Technology Joining the Game

Apart from Mini LED backlight, dual cell solution is also regarded as a “secret weapon” for LCD panel maker to compete with OLED.

Hisense showcased dual cell backlight series ULED TVs. Dual cell uses the second piece of LCD panel as local dimming solution, addressing that the numbers of dimming zones can be even higher. The panel at the show offers 24 million local dimming zone, delivering high contrast and refine display performance.
