Touch Taiwan 2019, the major business fair for the display industry, kicked off on August 28 at Nangang Exhibition Center in Taipei, Taiwan. The event attracted around 300 suppliers from the supply chain to show their latest display technologies and products.
AUO exhibited varios high-end displays
Micro LEDs and Mini LEDs are definitely the spotlight of the show this year. Event organizer particularly arranged a zone for Micro LED and Mini LED products and solutions which attracted companies including Epistar, Lextar, Macroblock, TOPCO, ASM Pacific, Toray, Nationstar, Refond and others to join. These companies exhibited their expertise covering comprehensive solutions from upstream chip design to transfer technology as well as driver ICs and key materials and components.
LED chip supplier EPISTAR and Yenrich joined hands to develop a wide variety of Mini LED technologies, including Mini LED backlight solutions for dynamic display and Mini LED RGB products to meet the needs of fine-pitch displays. These products are scheduled for mass production next year.
EPISTAR also showcased chips with light bar design which enables narrow bezel smartphones as the solution can shrink the area for LED light mixing.
Furthermore, the EPISTAR Group also demonstrated its solid R&D strength by showcasing its LED miniaturized technology, transferring chips with PN gap of 20 and 30 μm onto the glass substrates.
Meanwhile, Lextar collaborated with X-Celeprint to present two transparent Micro LED displays. With flip chip technology, the Micro LEDs were transferred onto transparent glass substrate. The pitch size of the displays is 0.35mm. The 4-inch RGB display showed vivid images with high color contrast while the 6-inch green-color-LED based display deliver high brightness.

Mini LED backlight panels and Mini LED RGB modules also formed the product highlights for Lextar at the event. Featured with high brightness and contrast, these Mini LED products can be used for outdoor signage, marine navigation display, automotive display and HUDs (heads-up displays).
TSLC quietly released a 16-in-1 Mini LED package, inside which 16 individually controllable LED chips were packaged with its proprietary technology. Pitch size between each chip is 0.7mm. The whole package may also be transferred and repaired with conventional SMT equipment, representing a breakthrough in Mini LED and Micro LED production processes.

Driver IC supplier Macroblock and ITRI jointly showcased Micro LED and Mini LED RGB digital displays. The number of LEDs used in Micro and Mini LED-based display rose greatly, placing challenges for driver suppliers. The Mini LED backlight planes changed its lighting done according to each frame on the dynamic screen, demonstrating Macroblock’s capability in the field.

ITRI presented a wide range of innovative interactive display applications. Integrated AMOLED displays, image recognition and human-machine interaction, ITRI developed a “smart window for virtual and physical interaction between two persons” which one may touch to acquire information on products, allowing retail businesses to develop whole new sales modes.
Equipment supplier ASM Pacific used innovative VR technology to display its equipment. With VR glasses over the eyes and smart controller in hand, attendees may take a peek into the wondrous, intricate world of semiconductor equipment designing through the lens of technology.
Material supplier Everlight Chemical displayed a type of adhesive material that may be applied between the surfaces of Micro LEDs and glass panels, while Cheng Mei Materials developed a series of glues, including UV-light shielding glue to be applied on Micro / Mini LED panels, and UV reflective ink for LED backlights.
As Mini LED technology becoming more mature and products entering mass production phase and Micro LED technology continues to progress, companies from the LED and panel industries both exhibited related products and applications at Touch Taiwan. These on-going progresses in the supply chain push the development of next generation display technologies.
